HOMOLOVI STATE PARK, WINSLOW, AZ - APR 14 -18, 2025
We love staying in State Parks. It's been harder & harder to find state parks that will accommodate our motorhome. Many state parks were designed to handle smaller campers, tents & travel trailers. They haven't been updated to accommodate larger motorhomes or Fifth-Wheels. When we find one, we will usually book it if it near an area we want to explore. As we head further west, they've been harder to find.
That's how we came upon Homolovi State Park in Winslow, AZ. Homolovi is Hopi for "Place of the Little Hills" - the traditional name for Winslow, AZ.
Homolovi State Park is a center for research and archaeology study of the Hopi from the 1200s to the late 1300s. Archeologists study the sites and work with the Hopi to unravel its history.
Homolovi has more than 300 archaeological sites identified within park boundaries, including multiple pit houses and four major pueblos that date back to the 14th century. Two of the historic pueblo sites are open to visitors. Homolovi I and Homolovi II are the largest sites in the park and once housed thousands of people.
As you walk. along the trails you have a 360 degree view of the surrounding area, much of it desert landscape. Imagine the Hopi living in this desolate area, albeit the Little Colorado River is nearby.
There are thousands of pieces of broken pottery shards all throughout the area. People have been respectful and, when they come across the shards, lay them on top of larger rocks so they can remain where they belong. I'm certain that some may pick them up and claim them as a souvenir, but I hope those people are few and far between. We were also lucky enough to see some burros wandering the plains.
If you are ever in the Winslow, Arizona area Homolovi State Park is a must-see, especially if you a history buff, like me.
😁very interesting
